Daily Painting

Everyday I create a small painting. The intent is to practice loose, intuitive painting that is reflective of an abstracted realism.

Circus Lady Portraits

I just started working on some new collage/paintings that are really fun to make. I’ve been calling them my Circus Lady portraits and have been playing with proportions and colours and keeping it simple. I like making them because they do not take too much time and they are fun to make. Don’t get me wrong I can easily spend hours on pictures but it is a nice change to have something that is complete in an hour or less.

So here is Birdy

And here is Grace

As I paint them I make up stories about why they LOVE what makes them DIFFERENT. I think i might add the stories into the pictures somehow. I am working on one I named Mona and purposely made space for the story. I have to think on it a bit though.

I had a good day and am off to watch Human Target. Night.

I love her work so much. I like the patterning, the colours the obsessiveness of it all. Here are a few of my favourites.

I love, love love the teacups. They are my favourite and I would totally buy that print and I don’t say that often. You can check out her website here

Pillows

I’m thinking pillows

This is a pattern from Interweave Knits that I am thinking about

But these ones are also making me think…Hummmm.

I have too many things on the go. Let’s see

  1. Finish painting the kitchen
  2. make another portion of the floor mat
  3. finish painting the cupboards in the kitchen
  4. Paint the faux wood grain at the coat area
  5. finish the cork board for displays
  6. Keep making my Circus Ladies Portraits and Post them so you can see
  7. Finish the headboard for my bed
  8. Make the Earring holder from the old china cabinet doors

Too much on the go. Need to finish some things before i start thinking of more things to do!

Workshops

My favourite courses in university were the printmaking classes. I think it was the camaraderie of printmakers that drew me. i love painting and find a great deal of satisfaction in the process but I think that the physicality of printmaking (in particular lithography…loved to grind that stone…that sounds dirty but its not!) draws people out. A painting studio is quiet and encourages a quiet, library whisper type of atmosphere. I found printmakers loud and boisterous. At the time I was a shy and timid teenager but I was oddly drawn to the atmosphere of a printmaking studio.

But the type of printmaking that I learned in college (lithography and intaglio) requires a very specific type of studio that is expensive and ill suited to a home studio. I did dabble in lino cuts, collagraphs and monotypes but it never had the same power as a good lithograph for me.

But it’s been about 15 years since I set foot into a printmaking studio and I was so excited to see that one of the local artist collectives had organized a Printmaking workshop in Dawson Creek for the end of February. Victoria Edgarr is going to be running the workshop. While I don’t really feel the draw to her work I am hoping that she is a good teacher and that I will get something out of the workshop. I did like this image in particular

My workshop is at the end of the month so i will have to take lots of pictures and post what I make then.

Random Pics OF Lucy

I think that these are two great pictures of Lucy. She had just finished winning a battle with a water hose and defeated the deadly foe called the sprinkler by chewing its head off (Mommy was NOT happy but still thinks I am lovely)

Best Things

One of the best things about being an Art Teacher is when you introduce a new project to them and the wheels start going and they are excited because you are excited about the project. Because we are at the start of the semester I like to start with creativity assignments.

This semesters creativity assignment is to take a theme (grade 12’s Human Figure, Grade 10 and 11 Shoes) and they only have three requirements. It has to incorporate the theme and that theme has to touch 3 sides of the paper, they have to use a certain amount of materials at least once and they have to productively use 3 hours of time to complete the work.

I tell them that I have no expectation as to what i expect to see but what i want to see is how creative they can be.  You can tell within one minute whether or not someone can draw but just because someone can draw really well does not mean that they can be creative. and that’s what i want to see…

CREATIVITY!

They have until Friday to complete this work and then i will post some of the work that they made.

Have a great day!

And DONE!

So happy how my rug turned out!!! I started with this

And made it into this

I apologize for the crappy pictures but I was so excited to be done that I just snapped some pictures in the basement. I still have to put the sealant on it and that will probably take me a couple of days. Then I have to slowly introduce it into the kitchen so my 85 pound lab mix won’t decided that she needs to chew it to claim it as hers! I will post some pictures when I have the kitchen looking all prettied up and maybe put Lucy in the photo also!

What a week!

This has been a long week. Classes were ending so I had report cards to write and last minute things to get organized and done. Then I had to prep for the new semester. Good thing I usually know how I am going to start a class so it is not that big of a deal. The big deal this week was that I hurt my back. Badly and I don’t even know how. I was supervising and went back to my room, sat down and couldn’t get back up again and it has been going down hill since. Its sucks and it really, really hurts.

However on a good note I had to take my car in to have it checked out because there was transmission fluid leaking out the front passenger side. I was worried that it might not be covered under the warranty but thank goodness it was. They also found a coolant leak and repaired that also. Everything had been under a recall notice that I did not receive. I guess they only take care of it when it becomes a problem.

So today’s goal is to start painting the rug design. I had spent the last week putting on four coats of green paint as the base colour and I am going to paint the design in a turquoise blue. I will post progress pictures when I finish for the day. I’ll see how long I can paint for standing up. Might not be able to get a lot accomplished but I am going to try my darnedest.

Painted Rugs

I am excited by the possibilities of this idea and I even started one and then i went back and read the instructions…I painted my base colour on the wrong side. Sometimes I leap before looking and end up you know where. However it is not such a big mistake that I can’t fix it tonight.

So my inspiration picture isMy background colour is going to be a dark sage green and I am focusing on the dark blue flower pattern which I am going to do in a light turquoise. My kitchen is small so I don’t want anything to crazy busy but a little crazy busy is ok!
